Since many greenhouses are expensive, why not build your own? The following instructions will show you how to build a greenhouse in a cost effective manner.

Required Tools and Materials

Bricks
Measuring tape
Scissors
Hammer
Plastic sheeting
Saw
Copper or PVC pipe
2-foot long rebar stakes
Shovel

Step 1

Use your tape measure to designate a 3 W x 6 ft L space on the grass. This is the space to be used for the greenhouse. Make it larger if you wish.

Step 2

Remove the grass from the designated area. This will make construction easier. Note that new soil may be required by some plants.

Step 3

Set the 2 ft long rebar stakes by the corners and perimeters of the area. Set stakes every couple of feet by the six foot side of the space.

Step 4

Position the stakes across each other. This will be the base of the whole unit. A foot of the stakes must be visible, but make certain the stakes are set firmly in the ground.

Step 5

Slice the copper PVC. This will be the arches of your greenhouse. To make the arches, just bend the tubes. In this example the tubes have to be 4 ft high.

Step 6

Put the PVC pipes’ ends over the rebar stakes. The stakes and the PVC pipe should be 5 ft tall. If your area specs are different, it will be higher.

Step 7

Slice the plastic sheeting to shield the PVC. Make sure to leave about 8 inches of plastic on both sides of the sheeting.

Step 8

After you build a greenhouse, cover it with the sheeting. Put the rocks at the sides of the unit. This will protect the sheeting from the wind.

Basic Planning Considerations

The most important factor will be the available space. Depending on where you live, you may have to assess the zoning laws in your area and any restrictions.

You also have to consider the shape. Aside from the example provided here, you can also make Quonset huts, A frames, or units with Mansard roofing. You can also build the structure so it leans on the house.

Location

The unit must be set in a place that gets plenty of sunlight. The best place is the south or southeast side of an edifice. If it gets very hot in the afternoon, consider placing the unit near trees. But you need to make sure the trees don’t block out the sun.

Note on the Coverings

You can use glass as it provides excellent coverage plus allows light to go through. Tempered glass is more expensive but it is stronger. Fiberglass is even stronger, hence its popularity. Clear plastic film is ideal for smaller structures. Unlike other materials, it is lighter and very easy to set up.

If you decide to build a greenhouse, prepare to spend some time thinking and planning. By taking the time to think about what materials you want to use, the smoother the building process will be.
